Retha De Wet: Courting awkwardly with myasthenia gravis

Retha De Wet, who lives in Germany, was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in 2013. She shares how even big medical mistakes can be redeemed in unexpected ways.

My husband — he’s now my husband, so I’m allowed to share this story — we were attending some, like, university function. We called them sundowners. We go for drinks on the beach as the sun sets. I had the cyclophosphamide infusion two days before, which is basically chemotherapy. And I still wanted to go because this was my last chance, and I went.

I forgot to take all my anti-emetic medication, and I ended up literally just puking on the beach the whole time. And the poor guy had to hold my wig, which was terrible. But, I mean, we ended up getting married. I think it actually helped our relationship in the end. And I think the worst part probably was that he had to clean the car with vomit afterward.

I guess my tip would be: Always remember your medication if you’re going to be stupid.
