• Ventilators and Air Travel

Posted by Leigh on February 19, 2025 at 3:16 pm

    Hello,

I was put on a NIV (Non invasive ventilator) 8 mo ago at night and am now planning a vacation that requires air travel. My question is how did you travel with your vent or bipap? Did you have to check it in? Can you carry it on? Mine is in the shape of a box and not sure it would fit under a seat. I am also concerned about potential damage as I have had with a wheelchair. I would leave it at home but with the extra amount of physical activity, I will definitely need it. Thanks for any tips or information.

When traveling with Myasthenia Gravis and using a non-invasive ventilator or BiPAP, here are some things that you may want to consider:

Contact the airline you’re flying with or check online for their specific policies regarding traveling with your medical equipment. They likely will allow you to carry your ventilator or BiPAP on board, especially if it’s essential for your health. This will help avoid potential damage as well. However, since your device is box-shaped and may not fit under the seat, check with the airline to see if they have an allowance for storing it in the overhead compartment. If possible, invest in a protective travel case for your device. This can provide extra security against bumps and drops, especially during transit or when stored in the cabin.

A letter from your healthcare provider explaining your condition and the need for the ventilator is a good idea. This can help resolve any questions regarding your equipment at security or boarding. Allow extra time at the airport to check in and go through security. This will help reduce stress and provide time to handle unexpected situations.

I am on an avaps machine and have traveled with mine several times. My machine is boxy and fits under the seat in front of me when I have flown. I’ve taken it on several different carriers and have never had an issue. It’s a medical device and doesn’t have to be checked in. Hope this information helps.

A couple of years ago my daughter took her BiPAP on a flight. At the time, might still be true, medical equipment does not count towards your carry-on limit, which was helpful because she had her purse and her carry-on luggage.

This is still accurate, medical devices do not count towards your carry on.
