Huperzine-A
Posted by steve9000 on January 17, 2024 at 2:44 pmI am 4 months with MG, down to 17.5mg prednisone daily. Was on Mestinon as needed. Started taking Huperzine-A 3 months ago and in the last 2 weeks have been totally off mestinon. Still have small symptoms; chewing, swallowing, heavy eyes, etc, but not debilitating to where I would take mestinon. I absolutely understand that remission and varying degrees of MG manifests itself daily and it would be almost impossible to associate Huperzine with MG symptom reduction. However, for those out there who, like myself, are inclined to try additives, herbs, vitamins, and all sorts of snake oil, I just throw this observation out there . Wishing everyone the best in this new year.

I take this but have to break up capsule since it’s too difficult to swallow… I do quite well except for swallowing – it’s always a problem and nothing helps…

Totally understand. I also occasionally have a hard time swallowing , but am so thankful that it is not so bad I have to take mestinon to relieve the symptoms. I really resist taking drugs, except for prednisone, and only revert to them when I am totally debilitated which is not that often. When I read how so many others are affected by MG I feel blessed.

Try Source Naturals Huperzine A tablets in 100 or 200mg, small and easy to swallow. Good price on Amazon

Same here, very blessed to be doing quite well although have some lingering swallowing issues and awkward facial droop.. no complaints though – been over 50 years with mg and lived and still living a full life…

How and what source do you get your huperzine A from
Do I need a doctor? Would love to give this a try.
Thank you

The reason you’re feeling better and the reason Huperzine A works is that it is an antiacetylcholinesterase and works just like Mestinon pyridiostigmine to free up the amount of acetylcholine available for your muscles to function. Huperzine A is NOT a cure nor does it alter your immune system It simply frees up the acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction so the nerve can send a message to trigger the muscle. It is a natural product made from a fern and available over the counter without a prescription.its benefit is that it seems to be less harsh on the gut. And cheaper than Mestinon.

Thank you for this information. I want to try it. I’m hoping it works better than the Pyridostigmine.

I’ve read that it’s not good take Huperzine for more than 6 months?

I too have been taking Huperzine for 5 months and MG symptoms are down to a little leg muscle weakness, a little double vision at times and some swallowing issues. No prednisone or mestinon anymore. In addition though, my MG symptoms started after taking a statin for cholesterol. I quit that real quick. So dont know which helped my MG, or both did, or just a semi-remission. All I know is that it is working.

Trying to reply to your post, Huperzine is no snake oil, it’s the treatment of choice for MG in Chinese medicine. I like it better than Mestinon, I’m sure most neurologists don’t know about it. Thanks for posting, more people should know about it

Can I take this in addition to the CellCept and Vyvgart I’m currently using? I really dislike taking pills and having MG, Sjogrens and Crohn’s my medication box looks like a pharmacy already. I’m taking prednisone as well but for the Crohn’s not MG. Any information is appreciated!
