Mestinon, an oral medication to help with muscle weakness for those living with MG, may be associated with “nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, upset stomach, excessive sweating, muscle cramps, and muscle weakness” (https://myastheniagravisnews.com/mestinon-pyridostigmine/).

The dose of Mestinon may be too high for one’s body, resulting in a cholinergic crisis. A cholinergic crisis is when muscle cells react to too much acetylcholine, a chemical messenger crucial to the central and peripheral nervous system. A person enduring this crisis experiences muscle weakness, mimicking an MG crisis but requires specific treatment. The drug atropine may help control a cholinergic crisis and reduce Mestinon’s digestive side effects.

Have you experienced or heard of a cholinergic crisis and atropine?
