Many people with MG search for answers about why even mild illness — a cold, a virus, a sinus infection — can trigger significant symptom flares. When the immune system is activated, MG often becomes more unpredictable.

For me, getting sick feels like someone turned up the volume on every symptom. My muscles weaken faster, my fatigue deepens, and my recovery takes longer. I’ve learned to slow down, rest more, and give my body space to heal.

Some things that help me include:

    • Reducing activity during illness
    • Prioritizing hydration
    • Planning extra recovery time
    • Listening closely to early warning signs

How do mild illnesses affect your MG? What helps you manage symptoms when your immune system is already working overtime?

Even if in remission, any illness will reactivated all my symptoms. I dread getting sick.

I think I jinxed myself. I got sick 1.5 weeks ago and am living this right now. It triggered symptom flares and I’ve had to increase my prednisone and pyridostigmine bromide (mestinon). Doing my best to stay out of the hospital. I’ve been sleeping a ton, using my bipap more than ever, eating soft foods, etc.
