• Chocolate!

I find that if I eat chocolate, my MG symptoms flare up excessively. My ability to swallow and my speech, voice, and even my lips are affected. Even small amounts of chocolate cause these symptoms to magnify. I can’t drink liquids. I can’t swallow food. My speech becomes slurred. My upper lip becomes paralyzed. My throat becomes exhausted. Has chocolate affected anyone else this way? Usually after a day or two, I’m much improved. So disappointed I have to give up chocolate!

Do you find a difference in the effects of eating dark chocolate vs milk chocolate?

Chocolate as well as coffee exasperates my symptoms as well. I have all the classic MG symptoms but I’m seronegative and have not been formally diagnosed.

Chocolate and coffee are known to be Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deactivators. I was found to have various Vitamin B deficiencies and I couldn’t eat chocolate or drink coffee during my last flare so there’s a link there for me, regardless of the possibility of MG being involved.

You might want to see if you have a thiamine deficiency, it can cause most of the symptoms you mentioned.

Other than chocolate being a thiamine deactivator I don’t know why else it might cause it to worsen your symptoms.

    Hope you figure it out!

I think there could also be a difference in MG symptoms based on the cocoa percentage of the chocolate, I.e. milk versus dark, etc. And this could be because of the higher concentration of Magnesium in the darker chocolates versus the less cocoa prevalent versions.

Everyone is different. I have had gMG for around 12 years now. I’m a choco-holic. I must consume 4 or 5 chocolate bars per week (milk or dark) with no effect on my MG, plus, of the supplements I take, I daily take 300mg of Magnesium Oxide. Touch wood, I’m doing fine. Plus, my A1c is under control.

Chocolate does not bother me, I eat dark which has less sugar.
