My MG started at age 66 with diplopia which caused some problems with driving.  I used a patch (not so good) and then glasses with prisms (fair) for several years driving from Maine to TX twice a year.  Then I had eye surgery (essentially the same as for children’s strabismus).   After the surgery I have had no diplopia problems and no problem driving now for about 8 years.  Now at age 80, my myasthenia is essentially asymptomatic while taking only 10mg prednisone every other day (=5mg/day) and one or two 60mg pyridostigmine tabs a day.  About 7  years ago I was started on azathioprine, but after 2 months on it, I developed jaundice from its liver toxicity and went back on the prednisone.

MemberNovember 10, 2021 at 8:38 pm in reply to: Third COVID-19 Vaccine and Myasthenia GravisI Â had my third (full dose) shot 3 weeks ago. Â Arm was a little sore. Â The next few days felt like I was “coming down with a cold”. Â But, did not really limit me in any way. Â I did not feel sick or have any significant pain. Â No exacerbation of myasthenia symptoms.
I am 80 and have been diagnosed with general myasthenia gravis for 14 years. Â I take prednisone. Â Dose used to be much higher but is now down to 10mg/48hrs. Â Pyridostigmine 2-3 60mg tab/day.
Wearing mask in stores, etc. or crowds seems to be a prudent choice with Delta around. -
I am a Vietnam veteran and was diagnosed with MG in 2007. Â I know of two other Vietnam Veterans with MG.

I assume that all the answers above were for prednisone dosages per day. Â I have been taking it for 14 Â years dosing every other day (not every day). Â The theory was that this would reduce side effects. Â I have been as high as 40mg /48hrs. Â Presently down to 10 mg/48hrs. Â Skin thinning and bruising somewhat of a problem, but that may be in part a problem with the 81mg aspirin I have to take every day and my age (79). Â There may be some osteopenia but may also be due to age. Â Was on azathioprine for a few months until I had a liver toxicity from it. Â Had to go back on prednisone. Â Â The good news is that the days I take prednisone my arthritis is less painful.

MemberSeptember 15, 2021 at 7:23 pm in reply to: COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot and Myasthenia GravisI had the two Moderna shots in January and February. Â Only a slightly sore arm with the second. Â I only take 10 mg Prednisone every other day plus several pyridostigmine every day. Â I was congratulating myself on tapering down to that low dose at -my last neuro appointment. Â However, she pointed out that my immune system activity was probably diminishing due to age rather than MG remission (I will be 80 next month – diagnosed 14 years ago). Â So, I hope to get a booster soon.

I’m still taking the aspirin and haven’t tried to get off it. Â I have an artificial aortic valve (TAVR) and the cardiologist insists that I should keep taking it indefinitely.

I think taking prednisone every other day (not daily) minimizes side effects. Â But, perhaps if one needs very high doses this might not be possible. Â I have always taken it every other day.
