Short Bio

Hi!  I’m Marlene.  I am presently 67, married and care for my disabled husband.  I do not know how long I have had MG, but my left eye started drooping about 1975, and when I got new glasses, it stopped drooping.  It did that every few years.  Around 1994 I started having trouble swallowing.  I could swallow, but it would not go down nor come back up.  Very scary.  My PCP doctor couldn’t find anything wrong.  I then started having trouble with double vision.  I only saw single when I looked straight ahead.  It has never gone away to this day.  I went to an ophthalmologist and they could not figure out what was wrong.  They said it was Brown’s Sheath Syndrome.  It doesn’t exist.  I was finally diagnosed in 2007 by a neurologist.  I have generalized MG.  It affects my eyes with the drooping and double vision, and all my muscles.  I have to do things differently and pace myself.  If I do too much I feel ill for hours or days.  I cannot get stressed or emotional or I will be much worse.  I can do a lot, for which I am grateful.  But I do have to limit what I do.  I cannot get much done with housework, etc. and I have to pace myself.  I break large projects into small manageable ones.  I try to stay calm, no matter what.  My eyes are very sensitive to light and I don’t hear very well either.  I am retired from my part time customer service job where I sat and spoke to people on the phone.  I am not happy with my limitations with all my activities and how I nearly always feel in pain, sometimes short of breath and not well, however I am so very grateful that I can still function.
