My first neurologist told me to avoid magnesium. My new Neurologist said he did not think that it made a difference. I do not take any supplements with magnesium in it and I check food labels for added magnesium. What have you heard about magnesium and MG?

Hello, I was told magnesium is not good for people who has Myasthenia Gravis.

I was diagnosed with MG in 2009. The lower leg cramps were so painful, distorting and debilitating. My PCP (Neurologist never recommended but knows I’m taking it) recommended Magnesium and it worked wonders after awhile to stop the cramps and I have never had a cramping problem since.

My magnesium level is checked every three months and is normal. I will say I’ve been hospitalized twice since diagnosis and since my magnesium level was normal, they did not give me this supplement while hospitalized. However once at home, I started it again and am still taking magnesium, no more cramps! Hope this helps.

I’ve never been told to avoid magnesium EXCEPT intravenously. I’ve also experienced debilitating leg cramps at night but I believe it was a side effect of Pyridostigmine (Mestinon). My neurologist said she had heard of this effect and tapered me off the Mestinon. Since then, the cramping is essentially non-existent.

I was told (and have read) to watch out out for high levels of magnesium, which could increase symptoms. But, I know that we’re all different and may not have the same reaction.

I’ve read the caution about taking magnesium intravenously.<div>I take a supplement every day because of restless legs, and I’ve never had a problem. </div>

I’ve read that it’s IV magnesium that’s a problem for MG, not regular supplements. I avoid extra supplements other than my multivitamin though. I’m on Mestinon and had occasional leg cramps and bad restless legs, which I solved by taking a natural supplement from Terry I got on amazon

I’ve been told multiple times by several practitioners to avoid magnesium, it’s also on use cautiously lists for mg.

During my recent crisis, my magnesium level was dangerously low and I received an IV supplement, as I was unable to swallow. I was so ill who really knows how or if it harmed me.

In the past, I’ve used mylanta for severe stomach upset, only has 270mg magnesium. I accidentally took mylanta about an hour after taking mestinon. My mestinon wasn’t working and my jaw was becoming more numb. I realized what I’d done, took mestinon and symptoms improved.

Some of us might be more sensitive to certain combinations than others. Who knows?

I am sensitive to magnesium in anthing. Mineral water, energy drinks, gummies, anything, will cause explosive diarrhea, and eventually a flare of symptoms. I totally avoid it.

    Hey Jamie.

The thing about magnesium is that we are all different. We need it, and we can get most of it in the foods we eat. Nearly every supplement has added magnesium. I personally avoid any product that has additional magnesium added and I avoid epsom salt soaks. As you can see in the comments, some of us tolerate it well and have no issues and others are very sensitive to it. You won’t know where you fall on that spectrum until you see for yourself. If you do decide to try adding a supplement or epsom salt foot soaks, only add one thing to your normal routine. That way if your symptoms flare, you can pinpoint what the cause was and let your care team know.
